The Edge Trends Committee sponsored a free seminar entitled “Three Practical Steps for Advancing Your Career, Standing Out as a Leader, and Liking Your Life” on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 7:30 a.m. in the UCSD Extension Classroom. The guest speaker was Patty Azzarello, the straight-shooting Silicon Valley executive and author of the book Rise who has held various high-level leadership roles over her 25 year career in the high tech industry.

The attendees learned about the differences between working hard and succeeding, how to increase one’s visibility without being annoying, how the most successful people ask for and receive a lot of help from their colleagues, and how to manage trade-offs between work and life so that both are enjoyable. Patty shared entertaining stories from her career illustrating these points.

Overall, it was an enriching seminar and delivered concrete ways for immediately becoming a better leader regardless of current title or position. Two memorable quotes are “If you need to educate people about what you do, by definition you are not relevant” and “If you’re not in over your head from time to time, you are not getting ahead”. The turn-out was at all-time high, with 55+ people in attendance.
