“Exploring Contemporary Management Challenges” addressed the subject of retaining and engaging key talent. The assignment was to gather information from interviews, surveys and literature and to look for common themes in the collected data. The 29 researchers conducted 54 interviews from 13 science and technology companies, collected surveys from 477 respondents, and included 107 citations in their reports.
Some of the common themes and findings:
- Active recognition: know of individual and team contributions; put rising stars on most challenging projects; rotational assignments and growth scored high.
- Mentoring: helps employees know what strategy the company is pursuing, why, and how their goals alignment to those strategies; relationship with the supervisor scored very high; planned communication with employee is effective; active development and coaching.
- Reducing Attrition Rates: reinforce and integrate company culture with positive emotional commitment; innovate as a business strategy – this keeps talent engaged; a sense of purpose and opportunity reduces the probability of leaving by 87%; attrition rates are affected by uncertainty, quality of management, and the sense of the importance of the work assignments.
- Quality of management is essential: feeling respected; stability of the organization; manager awareness.
